Perception Pixelated

In this piece, I hung square mirrors from clear fishing wire. While the mirrors hang, they twist and turn, constantly changing the viewing experience. When looking at the sculpture, one’s image of themselves and the world around them becomes distorted and pixelated. Some of the tiles are built from cardboard layered with warped mirror paper. These warped mirrors represent blurry sections created by pixels and underscore the exaggerated distortion of seeing one’s appearance in mass media. Additionally, the collection of mirrors references the abundance of self-awareness and narcissism prevalent in today’s culture. As the viewer looks into the sculpture and walks around it, there are moments when they cannot see their reflection but instead see those of other people in the room. In these cases, the viewer represents the use of technology in modern times as they watch those around them without the consequences of their gaze being caught.
